BBC Panorama on Functioning Alcoholics in the UK

Sorry peeps, I'm going completely off topic with this post. It's got nothing to do with SEO or web design, it's about alcoholics and specifically functioning alcoholics.

I'll start by saying I'm virtually a teetotaller. As a retained firefighter I can't drink as I'm on call 24/7. Thanks to this I have a healthy relationship with alcohol. I probably drink around 15 to 20 units of alcohol a year, so I'm not against alcohol, I just don't drink much of the stuff.

The position I'm in gives me a fairly unique view of the relationship people in the UK have with alcohol, and it's pretty unhealthy. For this reason there's a booming alcohol rehab industry. But surely it's possible for the UK to address it's obsession with alcohol and getting drunk. Other countries manage it. Why does getting drunk have such an appeal? Why are people so obsessed with getting sloshed?

The BBC's Panorama program isn't telling me anything I didn't already know about alcohol consumption in the UK. It's reached the level where it's questionable as to whether there's any way back. You can't turn the TV on without some character in a film or soap glugging a glass of wine or a bottle of beer. It's very very sad.
