The old masters of the universe are still licking their wounds, albeit, no doubt, on a beach in the Bahamas. Wall Street has crashed and poor people are about to bail out rich people - progress!
The interesting thing about the collapse of Wall Street is that only a short while ago predicting it would have attracted ridicule. "Lehman Brothers gone bust? Are you mad!!?".
And so on to SEO. Today the Internet buzzes with the latest reuse on how to get a website to number 1 in Google. Social bookmarking, Twittering, Blogging, weird and wonderful scams, the list is endless. Almost as endless are the armies of self proclaimed experts only too keen to help you in your quest for on-line nirvana. So are SEO's the new Masters of the Universe, are these the men and women who hold your company's future in their hands?
Well, maybe. If Google continues to rank sites based on links there's a good chance things will continue. You'll be hard pushed to find a pundit who will bet against links and it's hard to think of other ways to rank sites - although I've got a feeling bounce rate has a part to play.
So are links bullet proof? No. Sorry but the answer is NO. Why make such a radical claim? Simple, the search engine results pages or SERPs. The SERPs are becoming incresasingly ridiculous, often dominated by sites with questionable links profiles.
You can laugh at me, I don't mind. I'm stood shoulder to shoulder with the man who predicted house prices would fall.....
